Volkswagen has unveiled a diesel-powered alternative to its Golf GTI hot hatch.

The Golf GTD is powered by a 168bhp 2.0-litre common-rail turbodiesel, and can go from 0-62mph in 8.1seconds and onto a top speed of 136mph.

While that can’t match the GTI’s performance stats of 6.9seconds and 149mph, the GTD is capable of 53mpg and VW says it can travel 650 miles on a tank of fuel, while CO2 emissions are pegged at 139g/km.

The GTD gets the GTI’s suspension set-up, with stiffer springs and firmer shock absorbers than regular Golfs. Read more

2009 Volkswagen Golf GTD

The Golf GTI, Volkswagen is now spanning its next arrow in the bow: this time, the Golf GTD. With a powerful 125 kW (170 PS) TDI engine, it is aimed at diesel drivers who value the maximum in dynamics. The new GTD is extremely thrifty but at the same time extremely sporty. The GTD tag already has a tradition at Volkswagen: the first Golf GTD – the GTI among diesels – was built in 1982.

Range of about 1,000 kilometer
As on the GTI, the GTD’s 6-speed manual transmission may be swapped out for an optional 6-speed DSG – which in the eyes of many experts is the most efficient automatic of our times. The Volkswagen Golf GTD with DSG reaches a top speed of 220 km/h; it accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and consumes 5.6 liters diesel on average (147 g/km CO2). These low fuel consumption values take both GTD variants to distances of about 1,000 kilometers on one tank of fuel (55 liters).
